The diaspora group requires probe on the Minister of the Interior Tunji-Ojo on the accusations of corruption

Daud Olatunji

The Nigerians in the diaspora invited President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that the Minister of the Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is subjected to a transparent investigation on the alleged corruption and abuse of charge before being authorized to contest the elective positions in 2027 and 2029.

The call followed a press release issued after an anti-corruption conference held on September 18, 2025, at the University of Lagos, organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Pan-Africana strategic group (Panafstrag) and the legislative center of defense of civil society (Cislac).

The group, led by Abanikanda Olumoro, an activist based in the United Kingdom, warned that the APC risks electoral defeat in the state of ondo

According to Olumoro, the unresolved accusations against Tunji-Ojo-which range from his role as a former president of the Commission of the Chamber of Representatives of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to the controversial Beta EDE humanitarian saga, must be openly investigated by independent panels of credible Nigerians.

“Failure to comply with these accusations of corruption before 2027 will not only damage the credibility of the APC, but could push the part to the anger,” said Olumoro.

He accused the Minister of manipulating the recruitment processes at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCOS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), which all fall into its ministry.

“There are complaints widespread that the recruitment and promotions in these agencies are now linked to the minister’s political interests.

For over a year, the Nigerians who have applied for work in these services have not heard anything, while the items suggest that the minister is checking the process directly, “he said.

Olumoro also referred to the notorious episode of “Honorable, outside your microphone” during the mandate of Tunji-Ojo as president of the NDDC Committee in the National Assembly, saying that it symbolized a culture of silence and the coating around corruption in the government.

He also said that the Tunji-Ojo company, now linked to his wife, has benefited from contracts with the value of hundreds of millions of naira by government agencies, in what described as a clear conflict of interest.

The activist stressed that while Tunji-Ojo has the constitutional right to aspire to the political office, his ambition to contest the northern senator seat in 2027 and the Governor’s elections in 2029 should be suspended until he erases his name through credible investigations.

“It is not about denying his political rights to him. It is a question of protecting the integrity of our democracy. Until these accusations are addressed transparently, it should not be allowed to run,” said Olumoro.

He also urged the APC to take responsibility for projecting its aspirants rather than leaving the burden to the independent national electoral commission (INC).

“The APC must prioritize the integrity in the recruitment of the leadership. If it continues to protect politicians from control, he risks losing the trust of the Nigerians at home and abroad,” he warned.
