The military says it has uncovered planned attacks on critical infrastructure.

Nigerian authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a potential disaster after the military uncovered a planned attack on critical infrastructure, according to a statement issued by the Defense Headquarters.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said relevant agencies responsible for protecting the country’s critical infrastructure had been informed.

Buba noted that several plans had been thwarted.

He said, “We are aware of some plans to attack some critical infrastructure in the country. Therefore, we have taken steps to prevent such plans.

“Security agencies responsible for securing critical infrastructure and facilities have also been alerted. As a result, some of these plans have failed.”

The exact nature of the targeted infrastructure and the group behind the plan remain confidential, citing the ongoing investigation.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in Nigeria, which has seen a surge in incidents targeting vital infrastructure, including attacks on power grids and communications towers, in recent months.

Military deterrence is a significant success in protecting the country’s critical infrastructure. Disruption of the power grid, communications network, or other critical services can have crippling and impactful consequences.
