The Minister of Housing demands the cancellation of Kano selection for violence, deviations

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi-Ata, has urged the Independent National Election Commission (Inec) to cancel the election of the Bagwai/Shanono Assembly, accused that the exercise was tosed by violence and violations of elections.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Sunday, Abdullah-Atlas claimed the election, which was held on Saturday, was hijacked by armed thugs who interfere with voting and intimidated residents.

He accused that “armed thugs were mobilized from inside and outside the canoe to disrupt the process, thereby revoking the voting rights of voters.”

According to him, the criminals invaded the regional government of Bagwai and Shanono at 5 am on the election day, “Using dangerous weapons and expelling residents from their homes and voting units.”

The minister further revealed that the residence of the Candidate Congress of all Progressive (APC) for constituents was also attacked. He regretted that although “initial reports and warnings sent to security institutions,” violence was not prevented.

Abdullahi-eyes noted that the Bagwai/Shanono, who had been waiting for the election after the death of their representative, Hon. Halilu Ibrahim-Kundila, in April 2024, was rejected the opportunity to elect new parliament members.

He asked Inec to do a new poll that would reflect the true desires of the people. “We also ask the security agency to sue all those captured in connection with violence,” he added.

When asking for peace among supporters and residents of the party, the Minister stressed the importance of protecting the democratic process. “The foundation of democracy is the right of the people to vote freely and safely for their choice candidate. An election that was damaged by violence is not an election at all,” Abdullahi-Bata said.
