Minister of Development of Solid Minerals, dr. Dele Alake has promised unwavering support for the Department of Geology and Precious Stones of the new consolidation at the Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.
The initiative, the first of its kind in Africa, aligns with the strategic vision of the Minister for an improvement in the development of the skills in the mining sector of Nigeria.
By hosting a delegation from the Department led by Prof. AdeSoji Adhesugba, dr. Alake has described the new department as a vital center of knowledge for professionals in precious stone and in the value chain that create jewels, underlining that the initiative will strengthen the Nigeria mining industry by cultivating a new generation of experts equipped to guide sectoral growth.
Dr. Alake greeted the establishment of the first formal curriculum in Africa in geology as a milestone, affirming:
“The university initiative is a commendable leap forward. By building a strong pool of talents, we are laying the foundations for long -term development and innovation in mining.”
Prof. Adasugba, in his observations, praised the reforms under the minister, observing that they have significantly repositioned the sector for sustainable growth. He appealed for ministerial support in guaranteeing the formal affiliation between the University and the Gemological Institute of Nigeria and has promised the department’s commitment to support the objectives of the Ministry, in particular in improving the mining contribution to Nigeria’s GDP.
In response, Dr. Alake has promised full support for the proposed affiliation and invited other institutions to follow the example of the Yakubu Gowon University in incorporating focused courses on mining.
“If we want to develop local ability, we must invest in home training. Your department is a crucial step in that direction, especially in the production of geology and jewels. We are also working to establish full mining universities and your contribution will be invaluable,” he added.
To join Prof. Adasugba with the courtesy visit was Prof. Aminu Dankishya, dean of science, Yakubu Gowon University; Dr. Tinuke Temitope, Registrar, Gemological Institute of Nigeria; And Dr. Aminu Isyaku, head of the Department of Geology and Mining, among others.
