The Navy arrested the ship, 9 suspects for alleged threats to maritime safety

The Nigerian Navy, NNS Jubilee in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, has seized an unnamed vessel and nine persons over alleged threats to maritime safety in the state.

The NNS Jubilee Commander, Commodore Martins Fakrogha, confirmed the arrest to journalists at Helms Wharf in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom on Tuesday.

The commander said the vessel and the suspects were arrested at 9.30pm on Sunday based on reliable intelligence information.

He said: “After receiving the report, we immediately acted and captured the ship, which is about 70 meters long and eight meters wide.

“Inside the ship, we found six tanks with a capacity of 120,000 liters each and a total capacity of around 780,000 liters.”

Fakrogha said even though the tanks on the ship were empty, the movement of the ship was a threat to the country’s maritime safety.

“There is no security whatsoever inside the ship, it is an unnamed, self-propelled ship with three spell-made engines installed inside.

“The Nigerian Navy must ensure that Nigeria’s waterways are safe for use by legitimate businessmen and women, we are committed to carrying out this task,” the commander added.
