Attorney General and Minister of Justice Nigeria, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), have clarified that the Federal Government has not yet begun the extradition process for Simon Ekpa, the Biafra agitator who proclaimed itself is currently tried in Finland.
In a statement released on Friday by his aide, Kamarudeen Ogundle, the Attorney General rejected the recent media report which showed that he had announced the start of the extradition process against EKPA. Fagbemi stressed that his statement in the forum for the involvement of stakeholders in Abuja on Thursday was interpreted.
“The attention of the Attorney General Federation and the Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has been interested in media reports where he was reportedly reported that the federal government had begun the extradition process of Simon Ekpa,” the statement said. “The report is not true and the total departure of what AGF said.”
Fagbemi noted that while the Nigerian government remained very worried about the alleged EKPA activities, especially incitement of violence in the southeastern region of Nigeria, this approach has so far centered on diplomatic involvement with Finland authority.
“To correct, what AGF said during the question and answer session was that the Nigerian government had been involved with the Finnish authority to ensure that Simon Ekpa was held accountable for his actions,” the statement was emphasized.

Ekpa, a prominent figure in the native of Biafra (IPOB), was captured by the Finnish authority in November 2024.
He was accused of using his online platform to incite violence and promote riots in Nigeria, encouraging the concerns of Nigeria and Finland’s authority.
AGF reiterated that the federal government monitored the legal process in Finland. “EKPA is currently being tried in Finland on the accusations put forward by the Finnish government,” the statement said.
His lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, recently revealed that the trial was scheduled to begin in June 2025.
