The NLC directs street demonstrations for Labor Day regarding the suspension of the minimum wage

The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) has directed workers across the country to mark May Day this year with street rallies against the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024 in some states.

The NLC gave the directive in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mr. Emmanuel Ugboaja, on Friday in Abuja.

The statement is titled: “Commemorate May Day in the Streets 2026 if the National Minimum Wage Act has not been fully implemented in your state.”

The Congress said the directive was necessary due to alleged violations of law by some state governments.

The NLC emphasized that there will be no indoor ceremonies or formal receptions in states where the new wages have not yet been fully implemented.

“Workers must gather at workers’ homes, trade union secretariats or public squares at 07.00 on May 1 2026.

“From there, they will start a peaceful and organized street procession across the state capital.

“The process will end at the State Government Building, Assembly Building, or Service Chief’s office,” the statement said.
