The Nuj Fct Council celebrates resilience, women

Prime Minister Nuj Fct, Grace Ike

[Press Release] While the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, the FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (Nuj) joined the global movement in recognizing the resilience, results and contributions of women in all sectors.

The theme of this year, “Accelerate Action” highlights the progress made in gender equality and the need for continuous efforts to break the barriers and create opportunities for women.

Women in journalism, governance and other professions have continued to challenge the limits, showing that leadership is guided by competence, vision and determination rather than gender. The Nuj Fct Council recognizes the growing representation of women in decision -making roles and reiterates its commitment to promote an inclusive and support environment for professional women.

The commitment of the Council for gender inclusiveness is further reflected in the historical election of Grace Ike as the first female president of the Nuj FCT Council. His emergency after 41 years is a significant milestone, demonstrating the evolving role of women in journalism and leadership. Ike’s victory acts as inspiration for women inside and beyond the media industry, strengthening the message that leadership concerns vision and skill, not on the genre.

He said that in the political scene, the International Women’s Day (IWD) should be more than a symbolic occasion: it should be a moment for women to really support each other, both publicly and privately. It is time to go beyond the lip service and stop playing in the gallery. A woman who chooses to abandon her women’s companions in an electoral race, instead aligning himself with men, does not embody the true essence of femininity just like the FCT Nuj elections.

He said: β€œWomen play a key role in the elections, not only as voters but as a leader, candidates and agents of change. Their participation can reshape the political panorama and challenge the status quo. However, when women choose to betray their genre for personal gain or political advantage, they undermine solidarity and progress that are crucial for the transformation of society. “

β€œThis is a time for introspection, a time to eliminate any past error, retrace our steps and return. It is an opportunity to transform a new leaf and to be truly in solidarity with each other, especially in the political arena, where the collective power of women is necessary that precious. “

β€œI want to use this means to ask leaders, the federal government, to the Nigerians well intent on investing in promoting women’s rights and gender equality. The importance of creating opportunities for multiple women to enter leadership positions cannot be emphasized.

β€œThe barriers of the past no longer define us. This milestone is not mine alone; It belongs to every woman who dares to challenge the norm, “he said.

The Nuj Fct Council has also invited the interested parties to continue supporting and enhancing women, ensuring that they have access to platforms in which they can significantly contribute to the development of society.

“While more women take on leadership roles, the impact is evident in journalism, governance and various other fields, in which their contributions are modeling politicians, narratives and progress”.

On this International Women’s Day, the Nuj FCT Council is in solidarity with women all over the world, celebrating their results and supporting a future in which leadership does not know the genre.
