The Nuj Fct Council condemns the harassment of MD NRC Opeifa, the intimidation of the female journalist and requires immediate excuses

This was contained in a press declaration issued on Friday 29 August by the Secretary to the Council, Jide Oyenkule.

However, Nuj, the FCT Council saw this behavior of the MD as an assault on the profession and a violation of fundamental human rights and the dignity of journalists, in particular women in the profession, and a serious threat to the freedom of the press and the security of those who are committed to providing true information to the public.
According to the declaration, “this conduct of Mr. Opeifa was not only dehumanizing, but a clear violation of the right to the journalist for freedom of expression and the freedom of press guaranteed pursuant to section 22 and section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as sheltered)
“It is an affront to democracy and the state of law and these acts of intimidation and violence undermines the fundamental role of journalism in promoting transparency, responsibility and public lighting.
“The insane attitude of Mr. Opeifa is another clear indication of the growing hostility towards the media in Nigeria and the intolerant posture of government officials for responsibility and public control.
“This conduct is unacceptable and contrary to the values of democracy and human rights”
“The Council Nuj FCT is firmly in solidarity with his partner Ladi Bala and reiterates his commitment for zero tolerance for any form of harassment, intimidation or abuse of journalists, in particular journalists.
“In light of this, Nuj requires immediate public excuses and without reservations from Mr. Kayode Opeifa and invites the Nigerian railway company to take decisive actions to prevent any anniversary of these accidents.”
“The Council Nuj FCT condemns this act in its entirety and has no zero tolerance for harassment and intimidation of journalists in the FCT”
“The Union will pursue all the channels necessary to ensure the responsibility and safeguard the rights and well -being of journalists in the FCT and beyond”
“The Council urges the authorities interested in supporting a favorable and respectful work environment for media professionals, recognizing their essential role in society,” concluded the declaration.
