The Parliament of children of Ogun requires an urgent end for abuse, abandonment, exploitation

Children in the state of Ogun have issued a passionate request immediately to all forms of abuse, abandonment and exploitation, warning that the continuous violations against minors threaten their future and the development of the state.

The request arrived on Wednesday during a plenary session of the 5th Parliament of children, held at the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oke-Mosan, Abokuta.

By opening the debate, Farida Olushola, representing the Electoral College of Ijebu-Ode and President of the Business Committee of the women of the Chamber, said that children remain the “leaders of tomorrow” but can only play that role if they are nourished in love, protection and care.

“Having a bad base can destroy our future,” he warned, pushing the parties interested in giving priority to emotional support and creating a qualifying environment for children to grow in healthy and productive adults.

Chaired by the RT speaker. Hon. Ezekiel Olaoluwa, the Children’s Parliament has resolved widely on the growing cases of physical, emotional and sexual abuses, as well as juvenile work, traffic and abandonment throughout the state.

As they praised the investments in progress of the state government in the wellness programs of minors, education and protection, young legislators expressed profound concern for the increase in violations against children.

Parliament has decided to solicit the state assembly and other relevant authorities to urgently implement policies complete with minors protection, strengthen the application mechanisms and encourage collaboration between government agencies, civil society and community.

Receiving the resolutions, speaker of the Ogun State Assembly House, Elemide Oludisi, he assured the children that their requests would have been taken seriously.

“They told us that they are against minors abuses and we must follow their call,” Elemide said. “They should have the opportunity to express themselves, which they did impressively today.”

The Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, described the alarming situation, complaining that many children in the state are subject to dangerous jobs instead of being at school.

“Go to Kuto or Lafenwa markets and you will see children engaged in work. Even in mining areas, children are exploited,” said Adeleye.

“We are not saying that parents should not correct their children, but the correction should come with love, non -corporal punishment or cruel care”.

He asked for an urgent action to protect children from abuse, underlining that children’s rights must be supported in every home, school and community.
