The president of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, proposed that an National Sports Festival Standard Olympics in Abeokuta will be the real test of the reforms in progress in the Nigerian sports sector.

He made this known, while virtually offering a main speech during the opening ceremony of the extraordinary meeting of the National Council for Sports in Abeokuta on Wednesday 16 April 2027 from Milan Italy.

Dikko is the president of the National Council for Sport which included all the sports commissioners and sports directors from all 36 more FCT states and other interested parties. It is the APEX political decision -making body for sport.

While greeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for the bold decision to eliminate the Federal Ministry of Sports for the National Sports Commission and the deliberated and intentional decisions of making sport advance, Mallam Dikko stressed that this has given the tone to the reforms of the sector.

His words: “Mr. President is known for making very daring decisions. The decision to reintroduce the NSC has been very daring and really challenged us. The current status has placed sports as national activities and the legislation and regulations necessary to support the sector are facilitated.

“We aligned with the renewed hope of the President and the agenda of shared prosperity and we have devised the renewed hope initiative for the Nigerian sports economy (Rhse) to anchor the reform agenda. This led us to a less traveled road. Refocus and relaunch as key pillars.

“We are very deliberated with what we are doing. The private sector must be more involved in our sporting development; our infrastructure should be renewed and updated while we have to put more emphasis on the base and the Sports schools. We must focus on the development of talents. If we get this right, we can generate immense revenues through exports through the exports of talents. The goal is fundamental to make sport to make a huge contribution for the nation.

Considering this, the importance of the National Council on extraordinary sports meetings cannot be emphasized.

“All these reforms mean that the National Council for Sport must align appropriately and ensure that the 22nd National Sports Festival which will be hosted by Abekuta should be the best ever. We should host a standard Festival of the Olympics that will set up a reference point for future editions,” he said.

While welcoming the members of the Council in the extraordinary meeting, the governor of the state of Ogun Prince Dapo Inhabitun, represented by the deputy governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, he assured that the state will host a memorable sports festival.

He said: “The National Council for Sport as the Apex sports decision -making body plays a fundamental role in modeling the future of sports in our nation. This meeting will inaugurate the 22nd National Sports Festival Ogun 2025. Just yesterday we revealed the official logo, the musical theme and the mascot. All these will speak for our commitment to deliver a world sports festival in May.”
