President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness for the death of his real majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Awujale of Ijebuland, who died on Sunday.
In a free personality signed by him and made available to this page, President Tinubu described the death of the monarch revered as a personal loss.
Below is the presidential tribute:
One of the most exceptional, most important and venerated sovereigns of Nigeria, his real majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, joined its ancestors after over 65 extraordinary years on the throne.
I received the news of this transition on Sunday evening with double pain in my heart as it coincided with the disappearance of my predecessor, the president Muhammadu Buhari. The disappearance of Oba Adetona left a huge emptiness within the traditional institutions in Yorubaland and Nigeria in general.
Oba Adeetona was an imposing natural sovereign who served his people with dignity, panache, class and an unmistakable sense of duty.
During his extraordinary kingdom that witnessed enormous progress and development in Ijebu-Ode and the whole ijebuland, Oba Adeetona provided uncompromising leadership to his people.
In his over six decades on the throne, Salindo at 26 years old, Oba Adetona used his role as the main sovereign to advance the cause of progress and national unity. In a moment of national crisis and uncertainty, he found himself firmly as a voice of reason.
I liked an excellent personal relationship with Kabiyesi. I will always love our time together.
He was an honest referee, confidant and a reliable leader without any case. I found his comforting company, enrichment of wisdom and strengthening of candor.
The qualities of service, philanthropy, investments in education and research of Oba Adetona through the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at the University of Olabisi Onabanjo, Ago-Iwoode, last monuments in his memory.
While the nation cries of OBA Adeetona, I extend my condolences to the family, to the governor Dapo Inhabitun, to the government, the people of the state of Ogun and the sons and daughters of Ijebuland.
May our deceased Kabiyesi find eternal rest and we can be comforted by his legacy of an exceptional service.
