The process of remembering is more expensive than the Election Election – Inec

The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) which was clarified on Saturdays was more expensive to carry out the withdrawal process than the election of constituents.

Specific advisors to the Chairperson of Inec, Mohammed Kunna, gave clarification during online discussions about “Regulation and Guidelines for Inec for Recall 2024.”

This event was held through the Commission X platform.

Kunna explained that making a withdrawal selection was similar to three constituent elections.

He said: “After the petition is received and verified to meet legal requirements, Inec must first conduct verification exercises in the affected voting unit.

“In order for the verification to occur, we must use the BI-Modal Voter Verification System (BVA) because those who sign the petition must be verified as the original registered voter in the unit.

“Then, Inec needs to set 50 percent plus one signature from the electoral district.

“After that, we proceed to the final stage: referendum, which involves the voting yes or not by registered voters in the electoral district.”

He added that the process involved staff mobilization, the distribution of election materials, transportation, and other resources, such as conducting three senator districts.

“In my opinion, the withdrawal process is far more expensive than selecting a single senator district,” he said.

Head of Press Secretary for the Chairperson of Inec, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, recognizes high costs but emphasizes that Inec must comply with the law.

“What is important is what we think we must do in every case if the constituents want to recall their representatives,” Oyekani said.

Previously, he explained that the Inec regulations and the Election Law determined the process to select the withdrawal.

“The law allows the selection of withdrawals only if the applicants meet constitutional requirements, including submitting signatures from at least half of the voters registered in the electoral district.

“After the petition was received, Inec conducted a preliminary examination and then verified the signature.

“MPs who face the withdrawal are informed and have the right to mobilize agents to observe the process.

“Observers and media personnel can also participate in verification and referendum,” he said.

Ohekanmi also discussed the possibility of online voting, which stated that the constitution did not allow Inec to conduct electronic voting.
