The senator who represents the territory of the federal capital, Ireti Kingibe, said that there is a growing resentment among the residents of Abuja against the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of being disconnected from the needs of the people.
Speaking on television channels Political paradigmKingbe said that the Wike leadership style was unable to straighten it to the people, insisting on the fact that the minister is widely unpopular throughout the territory.
According to her, the elections of the Council of the FCT area scheduled for the beginning of 2026 will act as a litmus test for the performance and acceptance of Wike among the residents.
Kingbe said: “Most Abuja is dark. So, I go there and I put the solar lights in some areas just to illuminate the place so that young people feel at least safer. You can’t keep them at home forever.
“They will come to me, give me the prizes and thank me for certain them.
“It’s not that Wike would not do it. You simply don’t know what they need.”
Citing specific examples, the senator said: “I know that the Karu market is dark and I put the lights there. The communities will write to me, saying:” There is so much insecurity in this place; Some lights will make the difference. “So, I provide them with the solar lights, but how many can I allow myself to put it?
Kingbe said that the imminent elections of the local government will reveal if Wike really has influence in the capital.
“This is when the people of the FCT shows to the ministers:” We like you or we don’t like you. “The local government elections will say if Wike controls the FCT, because nobody does it,” he said.
“These are only the people who have lived here for a long time who know the people of the FCT have independent minds. Walk on the streets and you will know that the only thing that unites us all here is our resentment of the minister.
“It is not just about development: it is a question of being treated lightly, contempt and contempt.”
Wike, who was appointed FCT minister by President Bola Tinubu in August 2023, faced criticism for his demolition policies and his perceived lack of commitment with the base.
Senator Kingibe’s comments further highlight the tension between the elected representatives and officials appointed on the best way to face the challenges of the capital.
