The Senate summoned Kyari over alleged discrepancies of N210tr in NNPC financial statements

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts on Thursday summoned the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, and his management team over an alleged N210 trillion discrepancy in its financial statements.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmed Wadada, announced the call at a press conference in Abuja.

Wadada said the development follows NNPCL’s unsatisfactory and unacceptable response to inquiries into its audited financial statements between 2017 and 2023.

“The public already knows that this committee is investigating NNPCL’s audited financial reports from 2017 to 2023.

“The investigation was delayed, not because the committee ignored it but because we wanted to do the work very thoroughly so that the results were unambiguous and gave the right signal to the public,” he said.

The lawmaker said the investigation began in May 2025 after concerns were raised regarding a review of the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation’s report for the years ending 2019 and 2020.

“The committee further reviewed the financial statements of NNPCL which had been audited and prepared by the external auditor.

“The committee also examined the financial records of National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), now known as NNPCL Upstream Investment Limited, for the same period,” Wadada added.

He said the committee asked 19 questions to the NNPCL management and sought clarification on inconsistencies seen in the financial records.
