The state adopts proactive steps to prevent flooding after the massacre of Adamawa

After the destroying floods that hit the State of Adamawa during the weekend, several states in this country activate the mechanism of emergency response and prevention strategies to reduce the same disaster during the rainy season.

Disasters, which hit Yola and surrounding areas in early Sunday, submerged communities such as Shagari Low Cost, Yolde Pate, and Sabon Pegi.

Residents tell how their homes collapsed under the pressure of flood water after heavy rainfall began at around 1:00 in the morning and increasingly intensive until dawn.

Among the dead are children, while dozens remain disappear.

Witnesses told reporters more than 600 houses were washed away by floods.

In response, other states in Nigeria did not wait for repetition.

From the stretch of the Bayelsa River to the Gombue Plateau and EDO erosion -prone zone, the state government activates the flood preparedness plan, eliminating the drainage system, assessing infrastructure vulnerability, and the sensitivity of a risky community.

The State of Anambra, which is listed among those who are at high risk of flooding by the Nigerian Meteorology Agency (Nimet), have increased their prevention steps.
Commissioner of State for the Environment, Dr. Felix Odegwu, said Governor Chukwuma Soludo reactivated the multi-agency flood committee led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim.
This committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Health, Information and Education, together with the Chairperson of the Regional Government and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Odimegwu highlighted that the awareness campaign has been launched in all regional governments that are prone to flooding-especially Anambra East and Ogbaru-to tell residents about future risks and the importance of maintaining a drainage system free from debris. He added that the reservoir in Onitsha, Ogboji, and Okwor-Ngbo had been increased to manage excess water better.

In the state of Edo, the Flood, Erosion, and Das (Sewma) Management Agency is conducting strategic inspections and deleting projects throughout the erosion hotspot, especially in Edo North. Executive Director of Sewma, Ahmed Momoh, revealed that with the approval of the Monday Governor Okpebholo, the critical drainage channel and the water channel were being cleaned to reduce the burden of flooding.
Temporary relocation camps have been established in high -risk areas such as Ilushi, Udaba, and Aghenebode due to the increase in water surfaces from the Niger River. SEMA officials have also been deployed to monitor the situation and provide assistance if necessary.

Bayelsa, which is located below sea level and is often described as a plain of Nigerian floods, is preparing for heavy floods by creating strategic buffer. The state does not have a permanent dam or IDP camp, but the authorities have appointed public schools as a temporary shelter and solving the terms that are institutionalized to reduce educational disorders during the flood emergency.

Walson Omusu, Head of the Directorate of Floods and Erosion Control, explained that the large cleaning of natural water channels in Yenagoa and the surrounding area had been carried out. The Directorate, which was made following the destroying 2022 flood, also worked with a local council to improve public infrastructure to be more resistant to water flow.

In the state of Sokoto, SEMA, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is conducting a joint impact assessment in the worst devastated areas such as Yabo, Shagari, and the Turata Regional Government. The entire housing block has collapsed, making hundreds moved. In the city of Yabo alone, more than a dozen family compounds suffered severe structural damage.
The assessment team reported significant damage to agricultural land and infrastructure, especially in Lambar-Tureta, where poor drainage was identified as the main factor contributing. The temporary shelter has been provided, while the authorities compile detailed damage reports to inform the future planning of urban planning and targeted interventions.

In the IMO state, the government held a high -level flood preparedness planning that involved NEMA, SEMA, Red Cross, and other stakeholders. Chika Abazu, Commissioner for special tasks, announced the creation of technical sub-communities for logistics, sanitation, risk communication, and evacuation coordination.
Collaborative action plans include the distribution of early warnings, the activation of the local emergency management committee, and the preparation of emergency assistance materials. Emphasis is also placed in synchronization of special agency contingency plans into an integrated state response framework.

The Ogun State Emergency Management Agency has launched a widespread flood sensitivity campaign throughout the urban and rural communities, including Kuto and Amolasho. Acting Director, Soji Durojaye, urged the population to adopt the practice responsible for the environment, warning that the disposal of waste and illegal structures that are indiscriminately in the water channel significantly increase the risk of flooding.

Durojaye emphasized that the Emergency Response Team had been mobilized in all 20 LGA and advised the vulnerable community to consider relocation if needed. The 24 -hour emergency hotline has been activated to ensure a quick response to flood reports.
