The Governor of the state of Kwara, Abdulrahman, Abdulrazaq, approved generous rewards of ₦ 5 million and a plot of land for each player of the Kwara United Football Club, after his triumphant victory in the Cup of the Federation of President of 2025.
The announcement was made during a celebration reception held at the Ilorin Banquet Hall on Monday, June 30. The governor also extended the honor to the U19 team of the club, who recently emerged champions of the opening National Youth League.
According to a press release from the Kwara state government through its official Facebook page, the rewards come as a show of gratitude for the historical feat of the players that finished a 49 -year wait for the coveted trophy.
“This is Nigeria’s largest trophy today. It is bigger than the League Cup. This has existed even before the League was formed. The trophy is in Kwara today. I must congratulate all those who have come true,” said Governor Abdulrazaq during the ceremony.
Kwara United assured the title of the Federation Cup after a tense raffle without goals and a penalty victory for the nails on Abakaliki FC in the Moboji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
Upon his return, the team was received to the welcome of a hero in Ilorin, with enthusiastic residents who cover the streets from Eiyenkorin to Gra, stirring flags and encouraging when the victory went to the place of the reception.
Present at the great reception were key political and sports figures, including Hon. Rukayat Shittu (President, Sports Committee of the House of Representatives), Excmo. Yusuf Abdulwaheed Gbenga (member who represents Shawo/Essa), Personnel Deputy Director, Princess Olubukola Babalola, president of the coach of the Sports Commission of the State of Bola Magaji, the president of Kwara United, Kumbi Titiloye, the president of Kwara Fa, Malam Abdullahi Musa Musa Thuraya Tunni, among others.
Governor Abdulrazaq, while highlighting the club’s trip, reported how his administration in 2019 inherited a team with difficulties incorporated in debt and instability.
“When we arrived in 2019, everything was inactive. We were a lot of money, but today the story has changed,” he said. “We are dedicating this trophy in memory of Alhaji Yusuf Salami, who spent all his wealth trying to take this trophy to Kwara without government support. That Allah granted Alijanna FiDaus.”
Both coach Magaji and the president of the club, Kumbi Titiloye, praised the firm support of the governor, describing the victory as a result of visionary leadership and continuous investment in sports development.
This historical reward package indicates a new era of motivation and recognition for athletes in the state of Kwara, reinforcing the government’s commitment to youth development and sports excellence.
