The United Nations Agency offers 39,000 to 39 Restoration projects of the Earth all over the world through the inaugural program of small subsidies of the G20 Global Land Initiative (GI), a top initiative of the United Nations Convention to combat desertification (UNCCD).

Taken from 22 countries, the winning projects have been selected for their innovation, impact and sustainability.

Over 650 organizations from over 100 countries have requested the prize.

The winners were selected following three revision rounds of separated UNCD staff teams, with various skills in the management of the territory and restoration.

The winners will receive between $ 5,000 and $ 15,000 to finance basic efforts that increase local economies, improve food and water safety and strengthen the resilience of ecosystems.

The announcement was streamed during an event that shows the winners of the subsidy.

The small subsidy program is an important tool to reach the G20 mission to reduce the 50 % degraded land by 2040.

Speaking during the award ceremony, the director of the G20 Global Land Initiative, dr. Muralee Thummarukudy, he said: “We are aware that these large numbers cannot be achieved by small sun initiatives. However, we believe, it is important that tens of thousands of small actors, engaged in restoring the land all over the world, are supported, promoted and recognized.”

The special priority was given to the organizations accredited to the UNCD and the projects that enhance indigenous peoples, young people, women and the elderly.

The program was set up in 2024 to support the non -profit organizations at community level all over the world.

According to a declaration, directly supporting civil society and basic actors, these subsidies will generate measurable progress between global restoration priorities, such as improving soil fertility, forest regeneration, sustainable agriculture, agroecology and adaptation based on ecosystems.

The declaration added that in addition to recovering land, the projects are improving the means of subsistence, strengthening the climatic resilience of the community and promoting the social enterprise and eco-pretended.

“When we make these small programs of subsidies, it is not just the subsidy. It concerns the network we create and the visibility it provides – both for those within it and for those who can benefit from their knowledge and experience,” added Thummarukudy.

Three of the projects with the highest score were on display at the UNCD conference of the parties held in Riyad, Saudi Arabia, in December 2024, to highlight their resizing potential and reply between the regions.

The declaration also revealed that the winners will also be on display in high -level events in the future, stating that the G20 is committed to involving inclusive and continuous and is exploring future collaboration opportunities for candidates not selected in this round.

By underlining that “this is only the beginning, this will be an annual process, the next cohort is about to start”, dr. Thummarukudy has invited community organizations that restore the land to be part of the network to be “large and small” [efforts] They are important.

He observed that the second call for applications will open in 2025 with greater funding and has expanded support for basic restoration efforts all over the world.

The innovative guidance restoration initiatives are essential for the creation of green jobs, in particular for young people and women. The prizes provide support that can transform restoration into a catalyst for economic opportunities and sustainable environmental management.

Examples of beneficiaries of 2024 selected include: Legacy of War Foundation (Rwanda), which will restore six hectares of degraded soil, enhancing 90 women as completely biological cooperative landowners. By integrating artistic and artisanal agricultural methods, the project aims to improve the fertility of the soil and agricultural resilience in post-conflicit rural communities.

Up2Green Foundation (India) is restoring mangroves and river banks in Tamil Nadu, India. The project is refreasing by 60 hectares and is planting 15,000 fruit trees, improving biodiversity, strengthening coastal resilience for the prevention of floods and the formation of local communities in sustainable agroforestal practices.

Sustainability studies and environmental studies (Nepal) is working to restore ecological balance along the mythological track of Nagaraj. By revitalizing farms, wetlands and degraded forests that use nature -based solutions, the project promotes natural agriculture and convivial conservation approaches.

The G20 Global Land Initiative was launched in 2020 under the Saudi G20 presidency. Housed by the UNCD, its ambition is to reduce the 50 % degraded land by 2040. By showing the restoration of the land, enhancing civil society, involving the private sector and the construction capacity, G20 GI is guiding the restoration to climb and energize a restoration economy.

The small subsidy program is a key component of this vision, which allows civil society to restore degraded lands and promote sustainable management of the territory on a large scale.
