The US chose Nigeria as a location to promote chemical security

The United States on Wednesday asserted that it has identified Nigeria as one of the most deserving countries to promote chemical safety for a safer world.

Senior Director, America Chemical Council (ACC), Daniel Rockniak, stated this at a workshop entitled “Promoting Chemical Safety for a Safer World,” in Abuja.

Rockniak noted that Nigeria is one of the countries they identified as a “hopefully good location for accountable care, and that’s why we’re here to kick off this workshop.”

He said his mission is to talk to stakeholders dealing with chemical distribution about how the country can handle responsible chemical distribution.

“We have seen benefits around the world when countries and industries take responsible action and have programs that identify specific requirements,” he said.

He added that the US would not change regulations regarding the distribution of chemicals in his country but would supplement them.

He emphasized that in countries that already have chemical management programs, responsible treatment can help improve company performance.

He said that if there are challenges with the regulatory process, responsible care can help fill some of those gaps by using best practices around the world to improve their chemical management.

Director of Chemical Evaluation and Research at the National Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC), Dr. Patric Omokpariola, emphasized that the concept of chemical safety has been around for many years.

Omokpariola said: “Everyone who comes into contact with chemicals and chemicals already knows that chemicals are inherently dangerous and harmful, so we must take care of ourselves in such a way to stay safe.”

He said that the real concept of chemical security began after the events of September 11 2021, which we usually call the 9-11 incident, during the attack on the World Trade Center.

He revealed that NAFDAC has adopted the United States’ chemical safety program, and noted that this is what is being implemented in the country.

He stated that this had been developed to ensure that citizens were able to maintain chemical safety.

“Chemical safety is keeping society safe from the dangerous effects of chemicals, while chemical safety, on the other hand, is keeping chemicals safe,” he said.

He added that this is to ensure that people who have various activities, such as non-state actors, terrorists and others, do not have access to chemicals.
