Thieves and arms smugglers arrested in Kaduna as police foil kidnap attempt

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced the arrest of two cattle rustlers, two notorious firearms dealers and foiled a kidnapping attempt and recovered a home-made AK-47 and ammunition in separate operations across the state.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Command’s spokesman, ASP Mansir Hassan, on August 22, 2024, police operatives, acting on credible intelligence reports, carried out a successful raid on a hideout used by a notorious syndicate involved in cattle theft from innocent farmers in Kasuwa Magani area, Kujama, Kaduna.

The statement read in part: “During the operation, Police arrested two suspects: Aminu Saleh, a 25-year-old man, and Jafar Ibrahim, a 24-year-old man. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime and revealed that they had been working with four other syndicate members who are currently at large.

“In line with that, on 22nd August 2024, Shafiu Abdullahi reported to Operation Fushin Kada that he had received a threatening phone call demanding a ransom of 10 million Naira. The callers threatened to kidnap him if the ransom was not paid. The Tracking and Response Team swung into action, using sophisticated techniques to locate and arrest the suspects.

“The arrested suspects are Umar Baso, Shehu Filani and Babangida Abdulkarim, all residents of Soba and Kajuru LGAs, Kaduna State. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime and gave detailed accounts of their actions.

“In addition, on August 24, 2024, Officers arrested two suspects involved in supplying arms and ammunition to kidnappers operating in Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara States. The suspects, identified as Dahiru Liman, aged 47 of Garin Kurama Village, Lere LGA, Kaduna State, and Sani Abdullahi Makeri, aged 45 of Kankara LGA, Katsina State, were arrested with one homemade AK-47 rifle and five rounds of 9mm live ammunition recovered during the operation. The suspects confessed to the crime and their long-standing involvement in other illegal activities.

“The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Ali Dabigi psc, appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to strengthen collective efforts in maintaining security across the state. He assured residents that the Command is unwavering in its commitment to dismantle criminal networks and safeguard the welfare of all citizens.”
