Tim Henman explains what separates Alcaraz from Federer, Nadal and Djokovic at a young age

Carlos Alcaraz has been compared to the “Big Three” Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic when they were his age.

At just 21 years old, the Spaniard has already won three Grand Slam titles and earned the number one spot in the world rankings.

He has almost every shot in the game and is considered by many to be the most dangerous player around when playing at full speed.

Given the completeness of his game, the Spaniard has been compared to the legendary trio who took the game to new heights with their epic matches and myriad of successes over the course of nearly 20 years.

What did Tim Henman say about Carlos Alcaraz, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic?

Alcaraz is committed to successfully defending his Wimbledon title after his epic victory over Djokovic in the 2023 final.

Ahead of his third-round clash with Francis Tiafoe, Tim Henman responded to John McEnroe by believing that Alcaraz is a more complete player than Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were at 21.

Making his own comparisons, Henman told the BBC: “As a young player I think Federer was a bit moody, I think Djokovic had some technical flaws in his game, whether it was his serve, and Nadal hadn’t learned how to play on other surfaces yet.

“Then you see Alcaraz win in New York, win at Wimbledon and then win in Paris a month ago, it’s absolutely phenomenal.

“You add to that his humility, his work ethic and the way he plays, it’s extremely exciting for us to watch and for the sport in general.”

What did Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic say about Carlos Alcaraz’s game?

Although Alcaraz did not have the opportunity to play against Federer before his retirement, the Swiss maestro has watched the youngster’s game develop and is very impressed by what he brings to tennis.

“What a career Carlos has already had and the tour is in good hands with all the young players coming through. I’m still a tennis fan, I check the results every day, it’s not that I’m happy to be gone, not at all,” he told Extra TV in June.

Nadal, who has defeated Alcaraz on two of the three occasions they have faced each other, will play doubles with his compatriot at the Paris Olympics.

“It’s a good thing that as a player I won’t be playing him very often,” he said at the Netflix Slam in March. “He’s an amazing player. He’s only 20 and he’s already won two Slams and a couple of majors.”

Djokovic has had a special rivalry with Alcaraz so far, winning three of their five matches. “It’s great to have Alcaraz in our sport,” Djokovic said in December 2023.

“He is one of the leaders of the sport today and he will carry our sport forward for the next 10-15 years. We will see a lot of him, tennis is in good hands.”
