Tinubu arrives in Brazil for the Brics summit

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, to participate in the 17th summit of the heads of state and the government for global South and the emerging economic block, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics).

The Tinubu flight landed at the base of Galeao aeronautical basis at 20:45 on Friday 4 July 2025, where the commander of the base of the Air Force Galeao coordinated the guard of honor.

The deputy minister of Brazil for Africa and the Middle East, the ambassador Carlos Sergio Sobal Duarte and the deputy minister for commercial promotion, science, technology, innovation and culture, received President Tinubu.

The president is in Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Nigerian leader, according to a declaration issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, would have participated in a bilateral meeting hosted today by President Lula, July 5, in view of the summit on 6 and 7 June.

At the Brics vertex, Tinubu will participate in a plenary session and provide an address on the reforms in progress of Nigeria to reposition the economy for global competitiveness.

It will also attract investors to capitalize the country’s opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, health care and alternative energy.

The topic of the summit is “to strengthen the global cooperation of the South for a more inclusive and sustainable governance”. The resolutions will focus on health problems, artificial intelligence, governance and climate change.

The governors participating in the summit with Tinubu are Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Dapo Inhabitun (OGUN), Babajide Sanwo-Elimo (Lagos), Sheriffo Oborevwori (Delta) and Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger).
