Tinubu calls for peaceful conduct ahead of Edo governorship election

President Bola Tinubu has urged all stakeholders in the upcoming Edo State governorship election to conduct themselves in a peaceful and sportsmanlike manner.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu stressed the importance of respecting the democratic process and the will of the people.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, Edo State residents will elect a new governor amid a tight race featuring three leading candidates: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

Onanuga said, “The President appealed to gubernatorial candidates, political parties and supporters to respect the democratic process and the will of the people. He has confidence in the ability of voters to make the right decision about their future leaders.”

Tinubu stressed that democracy thrives through “civility, tolerance, patience and respect for the rules of the game.”

He commended the National Election Commission (KPU) for its commitment to fair elections and called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure a successful and peaceful process.

Additionally, Tinubu commended the candidates and parties for their issue-focused campaigns, prioritizing improving livelihoods and boosting economic growth. He appealed to all citizens to maintain peace and resolve disputes amicably through established channels.

The president expressed “firm confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and KPU officials,” while urging them to remain neutral and maintain the integrity of the election process.
