Tinubu, Jonathan, others commit the support for judicial reforms to the launch of the book of Ariwoola

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised that his administration remains constant in his commitment to support the rule of law and guarantee the independence of the judiciary of Nigeria, underlining the current legislative efforts to accelerate reforms and improve access to justice for each Nigerian.

Tinubu made the statement to the launch of a book dedicated to the immediate past of Nigeria, the judge Olukayode Ariwola, in Abuja.

The book, The Judicial Legacy of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, co-author from Dr. Charles Mekwunye (San) and Ayo Hilarewaju, deputy director and president of the Nigerian Weekly Reports.

The work highlights its profound contributions to the country’s legal framework and its fundamental role in modeling Nigerian jurisprudence.

Representing the President on the occasion, the Prosecutor General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, San, praised the judge Ariwoola for his unshakable commitment for the construction of the nation.

He stressed that the retired head of justice considered his role not only as a judicial appointment but as a call dedicated to the national service.

Fagbemi observed that many of the historical judgments of Ariwola continue to reverberate through the legal scene of Nigeria, in particular in the constitutional and contractual law.

He also ensured the participants of the government’s continuous commitment to strengthen judicial independence, a basic pillar of a democratic society.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was president of the event, highlighted the importance of the book as a lasting testimony of the deep legal contributions of Ariwoola.

Jonathan praised the book to preserve institutional memory and had offered invaluable intuitions on the key decisions that have modeled the constitutional, electoral and administrative law of the nation.

“This book acts as a crucial resource to understand the integrity and impact of the vast scope of the work of Ariwoola’s justice,” said Jonathan, stressing that it offers a critical reflection on the role of bailiffs in a democracy.

The book was revised by Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, San, who praised his depth and his academic rigor. Owasanoye described him as a reflection that makes Arywola and the lasting legacy of his judgments reflect on the judicial philosophy.

During the launch, the co-author Dr. Mekwunye developed the essence of the book, which deepens the judicial philosophy of justice ariwola and how his adherence to the previous legal has contributed to guiding the jurisprudence of the nation.

Mekwunye observed that although he has never issued a dissenting judgment in his career, Judge Ariwola has advanced the legal principles through his approach based on consent, establishing a high standard for legal coherence and integrity.

In a bold request for reform, Dr. Mekwunye also underlined the urgent need for the federal government to face the difficult situation of the prisoners who languish in the corrective structures without trial.

He condemned the continuous possession of individuals, some for a maximum of nine years, without formal accusations or access to the deposit, calling it a clear violation of fundamental human rights and a stain on the judicial system of Nigeria.

“The government must act immediately to ensure that no one is unjustly detained without trial,” Mekwunye urged, underlining that the judicial reform must guarantee timely and fair access to justice for all Nigerians, in particular vulnerables.

The judge Arywola, in his observations, expressed a profound gratitude for recognition and reaffirm his belief in the judiciary as the last bastion of hope for the common man.

He underlined the critical role of bailiffs in maintaining the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served impartially and transparently.

“The judiciary is the final frontier for justice and we must never lose sight of our duty to serve with integrity,” he observed, urging young legal practitioners to support discipline and service values.

Judge Ariwola concluded with a reminder that “justice must not only be done, but must also be seen to be made in every court throughout the nation”, underlining the need for transparency in judicial proceedings.

The event, which attracted legal luminaries, politicians and prominent characters in the legal community, was also an invitation to action for complete judicial reforms aimed at guaranteeing fairness and fairness within the Nigeria legal system.
