Tinubu will meet again with labour leaders on Thursday to finalise a new minimum wage.

President Bola Tinubu will hold a follow-up meeting with labour leaders on Thursday to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage, according to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Idris told reporters after the 15th Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Monday that Tinubu would hold a follow-up meeting with labour leaders as a follow-up to consultations with stakeholders.

Idris explained that Tinubu was open to further consultations with the Labour Organisation and its affiliates.

“We estimate that the meeting will be held next Thursday. Remember, this was requested by the labor union when they met with the President last week.

“So the President agreed, he knows that the Labor Party wants to resolve this minimum wage issue quickly and the government also wants to resolve the minimum wage issue quickly.

“So, it is expected that the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress and all their affiliates, as requested last week, will meet the President on Thursday and thereafter the President will forward the final agreement or whatever his views are on the tripartite committee’s report to the National Assembly for legislation,” Idris explained.

This meeting is a continuation of the President’s consultation with stakeholders to align the figures proposed by the Tripartite Committee on the New National Minimum Wage.

The committee proposed two separate figures – N62,000 from the government and the private sector, and N250,000 from the Trade Union. The President is trying to find a figure that is acceptable to both parties before submitting the executive bill to the National Assembly.

The Ministry of Budget has been directed to provide additional support for the 2024 Budget to address any shortfalls. The President is open to further consultation with the Trade Unions and their affiliates to ensure an appropriate minimum wage for all Nigerians.

Thursday’s meeting aims to resolve the minimum wage issue, and the president will present the agreed figure to the National Assembly for legislative support.

This development comes as the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) is demanding a new revenue formula that will benefit the 774 local government areas in the country.
