On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a corporate directive to Nigeria’s security leaders, ordering them to immediately curb the rebirth of violent attacks in some parts of the country, in particular in the States of the plateau, Borno and Benue.
Speaking during a high -level security meeting at the State House of Abuja, the president said that the current wave of insecurity must be brought to an end, saying that “it is enough”.
Pursuant to the meeting behind closed doors there were councilors for national security (NSA), Nhu Ribadu; General manager of the National Intelligence Agency (Nia), Mohammed Mohammed; Head of the defense intelligence, Emmanuel Undiadeye; General Manager of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi; And the head of the president’s staff, Femi Gbajabiamilaila.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, NSA Ribadu said that President Tinubu was unequivocal in his education that the nation’s security architecture must respond quickly and effectively to the renewed violence in the affected states.
“He (Tinubu) said it is enough. He ordered us to work closely with subnational governments – governors, local authorities and communities – to bring a lasting solution,” said Ribadu.
The NSA observed that Wednesday’s meeting allowed a complete briefing of the president on the current security situation at national level. According to him, it was also an opportunity to receive “new instructions” from the commander to the end.
“Insecurity is not just a challenge of the federal government,” added Ribadu. “It implies collaboration with communities, local governments and in particular state governments. Some of the causes at the root are local and we must face them from the base.”
He assured the Nigerians that the administration does not establish itself in its efforts to guarantee peace and stability throughout the country, underlining that the president is deeply committed to restoring the order.
As he commented on the last attacks in Borno, Ribadu explained that the terrorists had taken advantage of the relative peace in the state to plant explosives in isolated accidents aimed at destabilizing the region.
“This enemy does not give up easily,” he said. “When there is calm for too long, they resort to shocking attacks to spread fear.”
Despite the challenges, Ribadu claimed that there has been a “significant improvement” in the country’s overall security panorama, although it is not yet at an ideal level.
His comments arrive among the renewed violence in the plateau, where several lives have been lost in recent weeks. In Benue, over 50 people were killed in attacks on the areas of the local government of Ukum and Logo on April 18, raising new concerns about the safety of rural communities.
The last directive of the president reports a renewed federal urgency to stem the tide of insecurity and prevent further losses of lives across the country.
