Traces of Backlash Donation of Gov Alia Benue Cart for Rural Women as a Tool of Empowerment

Decree of the Governor of the State of Benue, Hyacinth Alia to donate cart carts to several rural women in the state as a means of empowerment has created a reaction with critics who condemn the movements they see as demeaning women.

The branded Godebar under the “Hyacinth Cares initiative” was distributed last week to women in what government officials said was to empower women involved in small -scale agriculture and trade.

The government also claims the move is intended to reduce product transportation in the midst of determination challenges that have hampered agriculture and rural mobility throughout the state.

A statement issued by a government official during the presentation has stated that cart carts, equipped with steel frames and 100 liter capacity, are intended to increase mobility and increase economic resilience among rural women.

“Deputy Chairman of the Vandeikya Regional Government and Algovc Chairperson, Benue State Chapter, RT. Hon. Janet Hembafan Oukuna, has succeeded in distributing agricultural input to beneficiaries in the local government area,” the statement signed by Kawan Ngorngor Talento, has been declared.

“This intervention is part of the latest hope initiative, the national agricultural support program fought for by the First Lady of the Republic of Federal Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

“Distribution occurs at the Vandeikya Regional Government Secretariat, where the deputy chairman emphasizes the importance of agriculture in the development of rural and food security. He praised the first female visionary leadership and stated his commitment to ensure that the initiative reached the grassroots.

“The beneficiaries stated the award for the support, describing the movement on time and had an impact on the agricultural season,” the statement said.

However, the movement did not sit well with criticism of the governor who argued that the program had no dignity and failed to overcome systemic poverty, insecurity, and limited access to the market or financial services.

Some have demanded for more sustainable intervention programs such as access to credit facilities and increasing security for farmers and investment in mechanical agriculture.

Apart from the reaction, some government supporters have defended this initiative, calling it a practical response to the challenges of transportation faced by rural women

Former Secretary of the Publicity Congress of all Progressive Congress (APC) in the state, and Morgan Ihomun, also condemned the initiative of the push cart, which stated that the Benue state government should provide fertilizer to farmers instead. He stressed that fertilizer is more important at this time.
