Troops destroy 14 boats, arrest suspected oil thieves in Abia

Nigerian Army troops on Friday destroyed 14 illegal oil bunkering vessels captured with stolen crude oil in Abia State.

Soldiers torched the vessels, including eight large Cotonou vessels at Isimmiri Waterside in Ukwa West local government area of ​​the state.

General Officer Commander (GOC) 82 Division, Maj. Gen. Hassan Dada, who led the operation, told journalists that six suspects were arrested in connection with illegal oil bunkering.

Dada who was accompanied by the Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 14th Brigade, Ohafia, Brig. Olusola Diya said the suspects had been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and prosecution.

He said soldiers were at the river to prevent economic sabotage in the area.

β€œWe have been here since Thursday, carrying out operations against saboteurs who are trying to take away the crude oil that is the mainstay of our economy,” the GOC said.
