Troops thwart security breach, arrest suspected spy in Abuja

Guards Brigade troops have thwarted a potential security breach with the arrest of a suspected spy and four fraudsters in separate operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Nigerian Army disclosed this in an operational report given to journalists on Sunday in Abuja.

The army said the operation was carried out on May 9 by troops of the 176th Guards Battalion and the Guards Brigade Garrison at different locations in the national capital.

It said troops carried out routine foot patrols around the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Saturday. intercept suspected spies loitering in restricted areas.

Based on reports, items confiscated from the suspect included a wallet containing two Automated Teller Machines (ATM/cards, receipts and passport photos).

“The suspect is currently being detained for further investigation.

“In a separate operation, troops of the Guards Brigade Garrison arrested four suspected fraudsters at around 9am on the same day at Gwarinpa, along Dantata Estate in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

“The suspects were reportedly wearing military camouflage at the time of their arrest.

“The items confiscated included a ballistic helmet, a fragmentation jacket, a dagger, two motorbikes, four mobile phones and various other items.

“The suspects are currently in custody while investigations are ongoing,” the report said.

The army said the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to tighten security around sensitive locations in the FCT and prevent the infiltration of criminal elements.
