Nigeria’s police forces are once again facing a public indignation storm following new accusations of corruption and abuse of power against a high officer, assistant police commissioner (ACP) Ogundele Olorunwa, who currently acts as commander of the area, zone 2, Abekuta.
In a strongly formulated petition, the chapter of the Ogun state of the Committee for the defense of human rights (CDHR) accused Olorunwa of institutionalizing corruption, undermining the orders of the court and exploiting the complaints that approached his justice office.
The accusations, if you try, could deepen the public distrust in a police system that already struggle to reconstruct its credibility.
“Justice for sale”
According to the CDHR, ACP Olorunwa has openly admitted in a conversation recorded with an investigator for human rights according to which the petitions presented to his office would have been treated only if the money exchanged his hands.
The group stated that the officer requested between ₦ 100,000 and ₦ 200,000 from the complaints, leaving the petitions unattended when the bribes were not paid.
“This is a parody and a clear indication of the rot within the Nigeria police forces,” said the CDHR in his declaration signed by its president, his companion Fumbi Onifade and the secretary, his partner Ali Adhesina.
The organization stated that the registration – which described as “harmful” – is the proof of a deliberate extortion culture, adding that Olorunwa even boasted that the practice was the norm in zone 2 Lagos, under the supervision of an assistant general police inspector.
Alleged contempt for the court
The body for rights also accused the official of having challenged a valid sentence of the high court into question no: AB/390/2025 by seizing the ownership of citizens based on false accusations.
Although presented with the existence of sentence, Olorunwa presumably went further to order the possession of an individual who contested his actions.
“This is not only corruption, but a total contempt for the rule of law and the right process,” said Cdhr, warning that this impunity represents a serious danger for the fragile system of justice of Nigeria.
A blow to police reforms?
The accusations against Olorunwa arrive at a time when the State Police Command of Ogun, under the police commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, was praised to improve security and restore a certain level of public trust.
Observers fear that the controversy may undermine those efforts, especially when the accusations affect the heart of the public perception of the police as a widespread institution with systemic corruption.
For decades, Nigerian police officers have been accused of extortion, brutality and contempt for human rights.
The #endsar protests of 2020 exposed these problems on a global scale, forcing the promises of the reform government. However, the rights groups claim that cases like Olorunwa show that little has changed.
The ultimatum
The CDHR has now given the police inspector, Kayode Egbetokun, and the police service commission seven days to investigate, pursue and regulate the officer.
Failure to action, warning the group, would have been interpreted as a tacit approval of corruption at the highest levels of force.
The declaration also asked for the collaboration with Amnesty International, the Civil Liberties organization, the National Human Rights Commission and other defense groups to keep track of Olorunwa’s alleged abuses in its current and past posts.
The victims invited to speak
With an unusual move, the CDHR invited the victims of the alleged extortion and violations of the rights of Olorunwa to come forward and share their experiences confidentially.
“The goal is to free its numerous victims, past and present, which have undergone injustice because of its shameful conduct,” said the group.
