Trump says Iranian leader called for ceasefire

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the Iranian president has asked the United States for a ceasefire.

But the United States will “consider” the offer only once the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free and clean,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“Until then, we are plunging Iran into oblivion or, as they say, returning it to the Stone Age!!!” he wrote.

The announcement came hours before Trump provided a “major update on Iran” in an address to the nation, according to the White House.

The address is set for 9pm ET.

The war began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, causing widespread economic turmoil and massive fluctuations in global energy prices.

This turbulence is tied largely to Iran’s continued ability to effectively block the Strait of Hormuz, the route for a major portion of the world’s oil shipments.

Trump has acknowledged that the strait remains a flashpoint in the war, even as he and other administration officials insist that Iran’s military has been “annihilated” and that the United States is rapidly achieving its objectives.
