Trump threatens Nigeria with a further 10% rate on Brics Alinement

Former President of the United States Donald Trump has issued a new warning for Nigeria and other countries in line with the BRICS coalition, threatening to impose a further 10 % rate on those that described as “anti-American policies”.

This arrives when President Bola Tinubu attends the Brics summit in progress in Brazil, where he is pushing for more equitable global financial and health systems. The presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the presence of Tinubu at the top in a Monday declaration.

Trump, who is making a campaign for a return to the White House in the next US elections, has published his warning on Truth Social on Sunday.

“Any country that aligns Brics’ anti-American policies with an additional 10%rate,” he wrote. “There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thanks for your attention to this issue.”

His comments have followed a critical praise of Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – the current president of Brics – who slammed the recent increases in the global rates of the Trump administration.

“If the international governance does not reflect the new multipolar reality of the 21st century, it is up to Brics to help update,” Lula said at the top.

Trump’s retaliation position underlines the growing global tensions between the US and emerging economies grouped under Brics – a block originally including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Nigeria officially joined the coalition in January 2025, becoming her ninth partner.

In April, Trump imposed a 14 % reciprocity rate on Nigerian imports. With its latest threat, the total tariff burden on Nigeria could rise to 24 %: a move that analysts support could have significant economic implications for the most populous nation in Africa.

Diplomatic observers warn that the growing Nigeria ties with the Brics alliance could contrast it with Washington, above all because according to reports from the Visa prohibitions in 36 countries reported, including Nigeria.

The government of President Tinubu did not officially respond to Trump’s latest threat, but the sources within the Nigeria Foreign Ministry affirm that consultations are underway as regards potential diplomatic and economic responses.

Brics Coalition continues to position itself as an alternative to global systems dominated by the West, looking for reforms in institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and pushing for greater South-South cooperation.
