Two minnesota legislators, the state senator John Hoffman and the state representative Melissa Hortman, were hit in their homes on Saturday 14 June, said Mayor Ryan Sabas of Champlin.

According to him, Hoffman’s wife has also been hit.

A person who is familiar with the issue told the Associated Press that investigators believed that the suspect could have laid as an officer of the police.

The person said investigators were still working to establish a reason for attacks and were still in the early stages of an investigation.

Governor Tim Walz said that it was a politically motivated shooting.

Hoffman, a Democrat, was elected for the first time in 2012.

He managed Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consultancy company.

Previously he was vice -president of the school board of Anoka Hennepin, who manages the largest school district of Minnesota.

Hoffman was married and had a daughter.

Hortman was the main democratic leader of the Chamber in the state legislature and an ex -orator of the Chamber.

It was elected for the first time in 2004.

Hortman, a lawyer, was married and had two children.

Both Hoffman and Hortman represented districts located in the north of Minneapolis.

The shootings took place at a time when political leaders at national level were attacked, harassed and intimidated during a period of deep political divisions.

Giffords, the national organization of prevention of armed violence led by the former deputy Gabrielle Giffords, issued the following statement.

“I am horrified and with my heart broken by the attack of last night to two patriotic public employees,” said Giffords.

β€œMy family and I know the horror of a targeted shooting too well. An attack on legislators is an attack on American democracy itself.

“Leaders must speak and condemn the violent extremism that threatens all that this country represents”.

Giffords was hit in the head in 2011 by an armed man who killed six people and wounded 12 more.

He resigned from Congress in January 2012 to focus on his healing.
