Two men have been sentenced to death for armed robbery in Kano

The Kano State High Court on Tuesday sentenced two men Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya to death for the murder of newly married groom, Yazid Haruna, in the state.

The defendants were charged by the police with stabbing the deceased with a knife

They were convicted of conspiracy, armed robbery and murder.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the defendants committed the offense on June 11 last year at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano.

He said: “The defendants conspired, armed themselves with long knives and machetes, robbed the victim (Haruna) of two mobile phones and cash amounting to N19,500 and caused her death by stabbing her in the stomach, chest and head.”

The prosecutor presented three witnesses and provided medical reports to prove the case against the defendants.

However, they denied committing the violation.

Abba-Sorondinki said the offense violated the provisions of Sections 97(1), 298(c) and 221(a) of the Kano State Criminal Code Act.

The defense lawyer, Mr. Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, presented the convicts to testify in their defense and asked for leniency.

In her ruling, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The actions of the defendants were inhumane, cell phone robbery was rampant

“I hereby sentence the defendants to one year in prison each for conspiracy, life imprisonment for robbery.

“The convicts are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide,” said the judge.
