United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Friday her mission to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries that formed the new alliance was a success.
Mohammed disclosed this to State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The former environment minister said he was visiting the country to brief President Bola Tinubu on his delegation’s visit to Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
He said: “We went to Ethiopia on a financial mission. We were able to brief the president on the proposals he has made to try to keep the dialogue going for some of the countries that are facing challenges.
“But at the same time, we are also looking at possibilities to include economic development so that the community does not suffer at the same time.”
Mohammed said the countries were in crisis due to unconstitutional changes, adding that they should return to democratic governance.
“On the other hand, they also have to look at the development paradigm for their people where there is terrorism.
“However, there is also a need to pay attention to employment, food security and energy. All of that must also continue.
“Now if they can show a roadmap that gives everyone confidence that democracy will return, then they will get support,” the UN official added.
He described ECOWAS as a family, and advocated regional integration for the West African sub-region.
“And the proposal by ECOWAS at its last meeting for President Faye of Senegal and President Faure of Togo to continue that dialogue and engagement is a good proposal,” Mohammed said.
