United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday urged African leaders to demand a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council, and denounced “historic injustices” against the continent.
Speaking at the China-Africa forum, attended by more than 50 African leaders, Guterres stressed the need to correct long-standing omissions.
“It is outrageous… that the African continent still does not have a permanent seat on the Security Council,” Guterres said, highlighting the gap.
He also pointed to the economic challenges facing many African countries, struggling with debt and limited access to resources and funding.
Guterres praised China’s development record, particularly in poverty alleviation, and suggested the country’s expertise could benefit Africa.
“China’s remarkable development record… provides a wealth of experience and expertise,” he said, urging African leaders to leverage China’s support in areas such as trade, finance and technology to boost growth and development.

The UN chief’s call for a permanent seat on the Security Council has been welcomed by many Africans who feel marginalized in global decision-making. As the continent grows and asserts its influence, the demand for a seat at the negotiating table is likely to grow.
“Africa can no longer be ignored or sidelined,” said one African diplomat. “We need a permanent place to ensure our voices are heard and our interests are represented.”
The China-Africa Forum provides a platform for leaders to discuss cooperation and partnership. As Guterres noted, “Africa can maximize the potential of China’s support… from trade to data management, finance and technology.”
The push for a permanent seat on the Security Council is part of a broader effort to address the “injustices” facing Africa. As Guterres stressed, it is time for the continent to take its rightful place on the global stage.
