UNIZIK graduate dies while trying to escape tricycle robbery by prankster

● Friend admitted to hospital

Ifunanya Miracle, aka Bliss, a recent graduate of the Department of Quantitative Analysis of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, lost her life in an attempt to escape a robbery carried out by a yet to be identified prankster on the school premises in the Awka area of Anambra.

Ifunanya’s friend, identified simply as Peace, a student of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, who was also involved in the robbery, sustained various injuries and was said to have been rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

According to a report by THE PUNCH, during her studies Ifunanya was involved in point of sale operations at the school premises.

The graduate is said to have closed her business for the day, Sunday, June 9, 2024, and boarded a tricycle with Peace to a destination.

The two were said to be traveling when a passenger sitting next to them allegedly attempted to rob them of their valuables.

A student at the school, who did not want to be mentioned in the press for fear of victimization, told our correspondent that in a desperate attempt to escape the robbery, the two students jumped out of the moving tricycle, adding that while Peace sustained injuries , Miracle was unlucky as she hit her head on the ground while trying to escape the operation.

The student said: “Miracle just graduated from university and has a point-of-sale operation in the school. The incident occurred around 7pm on June 9, 2024. You carry out your PoS business in front of my house.

“He used to put his business stuff under the stairs in our complex and the stuff is still there. She packed it up and put it back there in the evening. But suddenly we just learned that she had died.

“We were like; she still dropped her stuff under the stairs of our compound on Monday. From what we understand, she was on a moving rickshaw with her friend when another passenger ordered them to give him their phones.

“While trying to escape, Miracle jumped off the tricycle and hit her head on the road and by the time she was rushed to the hospital, she was dead. Her friend, who had also jumped off the tricycle, sustained injuries and he’s still in the hospital.”

Another student said the man, who had ordered the victims to hand over their belongings, later claimed he had played a prank on them, adding that unconfirmed reports said the man had reported himself to the police.

The student said, “We heard that the boy reported himself to the police station and said it was a prank. How can he play a prank on someone on a moving tricycle? After the accident, we have not heard anything. This lady (Miracle) has just died due to the carelessness of some people who claimed to be pranksters.

“It could be that he wanted to rob and when he saw the outcome of his action, he changed the subject to a joke because of what happened. The university has not said anything about the case. The fact that the school has not spoken about it is worrying. The girl has just made her summons.

“The deceased girl is Ifunanya Miracle, also known as Bliss, and was a student in the Department of Quantity Surveying. Her friend’s name is Peace, from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry. She was admitted to the hospital after the accident.”

The school spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, when contacted on Monday, confirmed the case and noted that the prankster, a final year student of the school, would be subjected to disciplinary measures following the burial of Miracle.

He said: “The university is fully aware of the incident. It was not a robbery but a very expensive prank. The students were told to bring their phones but they did not know it was a prank. So they jumped, one died and the other survived.

“The families of the victims and that of the final year student who played the prank on the victims held a meeting with us and it was established that it was a prank.

“The families have reached an agreement and we want the burial process to happen before the student who played a prank on them is subjected to disciplinary measures.

“This was an unfortunate incident; the school regrets it, the student who played a prank on them regrets it, and the family of the student involved will take responsibility for the deceased victim’s funeral and the other student’s hospital bill. We take this opportunity to warn students to avoid costly pranks that lead to death, the person will face the music.”
