Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika had a frustrating night as he received the first consecutive red card of his career during Club Brugge’s 1-1 draw against Charleroi at the Stade de Pays in Charleroi.
The red card marks the third expulsion in Onyedika’s professional career, although the previous two were for double yellow cards.
Onyedika has had an impressive season under Nick Hayen at Club Brugge and on Friday returned to the starting line-up for the Jupiler League clash against Charleroi.
The match started even, with a goalless first half. However, the game came to life in the second half. Charleroi opened the scoring in the 48th minute thanks to Parfait Guiagon.
Seven minutes later, in an attempt to recover the ball, Onyedika was penalized for a dangerous tackle with two feet.
The referee considered him reckless and gave him a direct red card, a decision later confirmed by the VAR.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Club Brugge adapted well. They fought back and managed to score a late equalizer, saving the 1-1 draw.
Onyedika’s suspension means he will miss Club Brugge’s next Jupiler League match against Royale Union SG.
His red card follows another Super Eagles star, Bright Osayi-Samuel, who was also sent off earlier this week while playing for Fenerbahçe in a UEFA Europa League match against Union St. Gilloise.
Club Brugge, the reigning Belgian champions, are now winless in three games in all competitions and risk falling down the Pro League standings as they prepare for their next Champions League match against SK Sturm Graz .
