US mobile phone maker AT&T announces data leak due to hacker attack

One of America’s largest telephone carriers, AT&T has revealed that hackers compromised data including texts and calls from most of its customers during the attack.

The compromised data includes AT&T’s disclosures to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): call and text message records for nearly all of its mobile customers, call and text message records for customers of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that use the network.

Call records and text messages for AT&T landline customers who interacted with the mobile number between May 1, 2022 and October 31, 2022 were also compromised.

While customer names were not directly disclosed, AT&T acknowledged that it may be possible to identify people connected to a particular phone number using publicly accessible internet resources, according to a report published by USA Today.

The company said in a statement that call logs from consumers who had phone service from other mobile carriers that relied on AT&T’s network were also among the stolen data.

The company said: “The stolen data did not contain the content of calls or texts. However, it did contain metadata, or the total number of calls and texts a customer made and the duration of each call.

β€œThis also includes call records and text messages that customers interacted with with AT&T phone numbers for six months.

β€œWhile the data does not include the subscriber’s name, there are often ways, using publicly available online tools, to find the name associated with a particular phone number.
