Vasectomy better than condoms for safe family planning, …

Medical experts invited Nigerian men to embrace the vasectomy and other safe and effective contraceptive options.

Experts said that this would help to promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and family planning and protect from sexual transmission infections (IST).

They gave this advice to the Hangout 2.0 organized by Marie Stops International (MSI) Choices, an NGO Saturday in Abuja.

Dr. Joseph Adwale, obstetrics and gynecologist, who spoke on myths and wrong ideas on contraceptives, underlined the need for male involvement in family planning.

Adwale said that men have left the responsibility for contraception for women for too long despite the availability of safe and simple procedures designed for them.

“There is a lot of myth, misunderstanding and disinformation on contraceptives and other reproductive health services.

“Men move away from this for a long time and have pushed all responsibility for women. However, male involvement is the new accusation we have,” he said.

According to him, the vasectomy offers men a reliable alternative to condoms and other contraception methods.

“Vasectomy does not affect your sexuality, in fact, it increases libido and virility, allowing you to enjoy intimacy with your partner without the fear of unwanted pregnancies,” he said.

He said the procedure did not affect the male reproductive system but only prevents the release of sperm during ejaculation.

“It’s painless, it lasts about 15-20 minutes and you are out of there. It’s a very simple procedure,” he said.

Adwale has encouraged greater awareness and education on male contraceptive options, underlining that the responsibility shared between men and women was the key to family planning and effective population control.

Dr. Kingsley Odogwu, clinical director services, MSI reproductive choices, said that the event aimed to create greater awareness, in particular among young people, to adopt a healthy and Srh lifestyle.

Odogwu is also an obstetrics and a gynecologist.

He said the organization would conduct free screening and exam on sti, hepatitis, cervical cancer and pregnancy planning, among others to promote public health.

“We want to increase awareness, putting the common problems that girls and women, including men, face how they relate to their sexual and reproductive health.

“Some of these disorders can exist without necessarily knowing it, and it is only through the screening that you are able to obtain them,” he said.

He underlined the need for people with disabilities (PWD), vulnerable groups and other marginalized people to have access to SRH services for their general well -being, quality of life and sustainable development.

In addition, Mrs. Esther Hindi, National Coordinator, Association of Women who lives with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASHAN), underlined the need for a constant awareness of SRH, especially among young people.

Hindi was represented by Halima Abdullahi.

He said that the awareness exercise would have taught the public, in particular to young people, to protect themselves from sti, unwanted pregnancies and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Miss Khadija Ibrahim, participating in the event, praised the organization for the initiative, who according to her had strengthened her for the right choices to make when she gets married.

Furthermore, Ola Matthew, another participant, described the commitment as an SRH awarding and the measures necessary to prevent the contraction of the Sti or the unrelated pregnancy.

Other highlights of the events were the awareness on SRH, health control and screening, session of questions and answers, distribution of family planning kit, gift items, games and aerobics. (Nan)
