“We are living in dangerous times,” Atiku decries rising insecurity in Nigeria

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said on Sunday that Nigerians are currently living in dangerous times following increasing insecurity in the country.

Atiku, reacting to a number of kidnappings by gunmen in various parts of the country over the weekend, said rising insecurity was a cause for concern.

In a post on his X account, the former vice president lamented the recent kidnapping of journalists, judges and labour leaders and their family members in Kaduna State.

He wrote: “In these trying times, the courageous guardians of truth, our journalists, stand as beacons of light, unwavering in their duty to hold power to account,” Atiku said.

“However, they find themselves besieged not only by the terror of their kidnappers but also by a government that continues to attack their freedom through arrests and detention.

“Adding to this tragedy was the kidnapping of 78-year-old Mr. Takai Shamang, President and Founder of Gantys Aid for Widows, Orphans and Needy Foundation (GAWON) and former General President of the National Union of Electricians and Gas Workers (now known as the National Union of Electricians) between 1982 and 1989.

“Earlier, Janet Galadima-Gimba, a customary court judge in the same Kaduna state, was kidnapped and released. However, her sons are still being held, with the kidnappers reportedly demanding a ransom of N150 million.

“Elsewhere in Katsina, 75-year-old Hauwa’u Adamu, mother of popular Hausa singer, Dauda Kahutu Rarara, or Rarara, as he is popularly called, was kidnapped on Friday.

“This despicable act underscores the dire state of security in our country and the abject failure of our leaders to protect their citizens.

“This kidnapping is a damning indictment of our leaders’ failure to ensure the safety of our citizens and an intolerable violation of press freedom in relation to journalists.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the abductees. I call on the security agencies to act decisively and without delay to secure their release, but prioritise the collection and dissemination of intelligence.”
