With less than two months to go until the US presidential election, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will face off in their first debate on Tuesday.

The Republican former president and Democratic vice president remain in a tight race, both nationally and in swing states.

The primetime showdown on ABC News will be their first meeting and only the second time theyโ€™ve shared the same theater.

This isnโ€™t the first debate of the campaign. Trump faced Joe Biden onstage in June, weeks before the president dropped out of the race.

When and where will the debate take place?

The debate will begin at 9:00 p.m. EDT (01:00 GMT) on Tuesday, September 10.

It takes place live on the American network ABC from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The event will last 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks, and there will be no audience in the room.

It will be streamed live on the BBC News channel and on the BBC News website and app via our live page.

The BBC will have a team of reporters in Philadelphia and Washington who will provide analysis, fact-checking and reaction as part of our live coverage.

What are the rules?

ABC World News Tonight anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate.
They will no longer have to worry about two candidates interrupting each other, because the microphones will be muted when one of the two is not speaking.

These were the rules of the early-year debate between Trump and Biden, after a problematic debate in 2020.

Harris had hoped to keep the microphones on throughout the campaign because, according to her campaign, the current format “protects Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the vice president.”

Trump will have the final say in the debate and Ms Harris has chosen to appear on the right side of the television screens.

No topics or questions will be shared in advance with candidates or their campaigns, and no props or pre-written notes will be allowed on stage.

Both candidates will carry only a pen, notepad and water bottle and will not be allowed to interact with campaign staff during commercial breaks.

Neither is allowed to step away from their pulpits, as Trump did against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

What should you pay attention to?

As the aftermath of Bidenโ€™s lackluster performance in the debates, which led him to withdraw his candidacy, demonstrate, presidential debates are important stages of the electoral campaign, capable of redrawing its outcome.

This is a unique opportunity for candidates to make a good impression on voters, as the clips go viral and the catchphrases are played over and over again.

This will be especially important for Kamala Harris, who has so far limited her campaign to making scripted public appearances.

A new Siena College poll for The New York Times, released Sunday, suggests that many voters still donโ€™t understand who he is and what he stands for.

The race between her and Trump remains very tight, both nationally and in the swing states that will decide the outcome.

How are candidates preparing?

According to the New York Times, Ms. Harris is preparing by teaming up with Washington lawyer Karen Dunn, who says Dunn has helped Democratic politicians plan debates for nearly two decades.

Dunn, who often represents tech companies in court, acts with โ€œtough love,โ€ 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton told the paper.

โ€œHeโ€™s not afraid to say, โ€˜This wonโ€™t work,โ€™ โ€ฆ But he also offers encouragement,โ€ Clinton said.

Philippe Reines, a former Clinton adviser who stood in for Trump during his mock debates, will reportedly reprise his role as Ms. Harris.

According to US media, Trump, on the other hand, is abandoning most of the classic debate preparation tactics.

The former president’s debate prep is being called “Donald Trump talking to voters,” according to ABC News, a campaign adviser said.

Among the former presidentโ€™s top advisers heading into this debate are Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who clashed with Harris during the partyโ€™s 2020 primary debates, and Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz.

Will there be more debates?

On October 1, rivals J.D. Vance and Tim Walz will participate in a one-and-done vice presidential debate on CBS News.

But the presidential campaigns have yet to agree on the terms of any future clashes between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris.

Trump has called for at least two more. In particular, he is pushing for a showdown on friendlier ground, moderated by Fox News and with a large live audience.

Harrisโ€™s campaign has said it will evaluate whether to hold a second debate in October, once the first one is over.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which has overseen these events since 1988, has been sidelined in favor of television networks that cover the campaigns directly.

The CPD, which had intended to hold three debates in September and October, accused the Biden campaign of flouting tradition. [BBC]
