Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, said on Sunday that the Federal Government was forced to import food items due to the sluggish production season.
The minister, who appeared on Channels Television’s programme, Sunday Politics in Abuja, assured Nigerians that food inflation would soon be a thing of the past.
He stressed that Nigeria would soon experience a bumper harvest.
“We expect a bountiful harvest,” Kyari said.
The Minister also explained that food imports were the result of problems with the planting season cycle.

He said that the lean season was the reason why the central government was forced to import certain food ingredients to reduce the impact of low harvests and high prices of staple foods on the market.
“The season we are facing now is a cyclical problem that occurs in agriculture. This is what is called the lean season, which is between June, July, and August before the next harvest.
“That is why the President decided to import rice, corn, wheat and other staple foods. After all the fiscal issues are resolved and the Ministry of Finance and Customs have issued the fiscal aspects,” Kyari said.
