Wike hints at the planned increase in land rent, regretting the tax evasion in Abuja

The Federal Capital Region Minister, Nyesom Wike, has indicated that his government is considering raising land rent, quoting a widespread rejection to pay taxes and land rent as his biggest challenge since taking positions.

FCTA had previously launched a law enforcement operation on Monday, sealing several properties owned by land rental discipline, including the National Democratic Party Secretariat, National Agency for Trafficking in Persons, Federal Land Revenue Services, Access Bank Branches, and Totalenergy Filling Stations.

These actions triggered a reaction from PDP and FIR, which condemned the movement by the Wike government as “unprofessional” and “insulting the country’s democracy.”

The Tinubu Ball President has intervened in the dispute, issuing a deadline for 14 days for payment of unpaid amounts and related sentences, which range from N2 million to N3 million depending on the location of the property in Abuja.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday after touring several projects that were taking place at FCT, Wike shared his frustration over the rejection of many Abuja residents to fulfill their civilian obligations.

My biggest challenge is the rejection of people to pay for what they are in debt. I will describe this in the next media chat. People want facilities, they want infrastructure, but no one asks where the funds came from. Abuja is not a city that produces oil; We only rely on taxes. This is not a new tax; They have been placed for years; “

He then highlighted the striking contrast between how property owners treat tax obligations abroad and at home.

“It is unfortunate that many elites have houses abroad. They understand the consequences of not paying taxes abroad – such properties can be scorched. However, when they come to their own country, they refuse to obey only because they believe there are no sanctions,” Wike said.

“Look at the arrears-20, 30 years old. And what is the price? We have not increased land rent, but we work for it, and I can convince you that we will do it. The President has given two weeks of neglect. Let no one think that extortion or intimidation will prevent us; we will do what is necessary,” he added.

The Minister also revealed that he had recently signed more than 1,500 residential certificates and assignments.

“If you pay your taxes, you will see the differences he made. That’s what we fight for to achieve,” he concluded.
