Wike says he wants to shoot journalists for ‘one-sided’ comments (Video)

Nyesome Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he felt like breaking his television and shooting at a journalist for commenting that the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared to be imposing a party state on Nigeria.

The minister who spoke on Friday at a media chat in Abuja, the nation’s capital, said the host, Seun Okinbaloye, a Channels Television journalist, was wrong to make such comments.

The Politics Today program focuses on the leadership crisis in the ADC and the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

On Wednesday, INEC had announced that it would no longer recognize factions in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark or Nafiu Bala Gombe, after they reviewed the appeal court decision.

INEC said it would strictly comply with the appellate court order in handling the leadership dispute in the ADC.

But Mark’s faction rejected INEC’s interpretation of the appeal court’s decision, accusing the electoral body of acting under external pressure.

Speaking on his show, Okinbaloye said it was disappointing that the 2027 elections would only be a fight between one political party, because of the crisis in the ADC.

He added that Nigeria would be democratically destroyed if the only hope of the opposition – the ADC – was unable to contest the 2027 elections.

“I am very sad because what makes these elections so interesting is when the race is competitive and not when only one party is standing in the middle of the polls and we are looking for other political parties,” Okinbaloye said.

“But we saw one of them speaking tonight about the state of the ADC, in particular, it seems like this is the opposition’s only hope heading into 2027. If this hope is dashed, we will be democratically destroyed,” he said.

Reacting during a media chat, Wike accused Okinbaloye of taking sides in the crisis rocking the ADC.

“I was shocked yesterday, very shocked. When I watched Politics Today, Seun. If there was a way to break the screen, I would shoot it,” said the FCT Minister.

“How can you, as an interviewer, say that we can’t just have one side? You are an interviewer; you are now conveying your views to them. Are you an interviewer?”

“There’s nothing wrong with asking questions to sources. But now you are on national television making statements like that, which means you have taken a stand,” he complained.
