Ogun State Vice Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele said that women, in politics, were not a zero sum game, hence the need to build alliances through gender lines.
He said politics should not be a battle of masculinity, but rather a partnership aimed at a better Nigeria.
Salako-Oyedele made it known while delivered his key speech to the leadership and empowerment conference of Nigerian women 2025, tagged the inclusion of women in politics: challenges, perspectives and the way to follow “organized by the Chamber of representatives for women’s affairs and social development in collaboration with the Nigerian Women magazine, held at the NAF conference center.
He said that one of the greatest wrong ideas on women’s political participation was that male domain threatened, as if the leadership was a limited resource, observing that countries with a higher female representation in Parliament such as Iceland and Rwanda tend to have stronger social policies, lower levels of corruption and more inclusive economic growth.
He said: “If we really want to build a Nigeria in which the opportunity for everyone is available, then we have to see women in politics not as competitors or usurper but as a partner in progress. The truth is that politics is not a zero sum game. The increase in women’s representation does not mean removing power from men. It only means that we create a more balanced and effective government.
“If we really want to have an inclusive democracy, we must face the challenges that women face in politics include; structural barriers, in which women are placed in parties with little chance of winning, lack of funds; Since politics is expensive, cultural and social rules, in which women are told to wait for their turn and violence and electoral intimidation. “
On the solution for greater inclusion, Salako-Oyedele has highlighted some key strategies such as, pushing for an affirmative action in the main political parties, women should support political commitment and not only to be an activism of the electoral time, taking funding for women in politics beyond the initiative, encouraging male allies in the support movement and ensuring that women are strategically positioned for the leadership.
However, he said that the inclusion of women in politics did not only concern equity but effectiveness since societies thrive when women have equal opportunities to drive.
