World News Day: nge reaffirms the commitment to press freedom

This is contained in a declaration jointly signed by the President and by the Secretary General of Guide, Eze Anaba and Onuohe Ukeh respectively.

Freedomonline reports that the guild declared it while commemorating the World News Day of 2025, which takes place every year on September 28th.

The guild asked for a renewed call to support facts based on facts and defend the freedom of the press.

He greeted the Nigerian and international journalists who, despite the discouraged challenges, continue to work tirelessly to provide truthful and accurate information to the public.

β€œWhile celebrating the World News Day, we notice the challenges the journalism that a profession must face in Nigeria, in particular the growing attempt to suppress the freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

“We will always be stopped to defend the rights of journalists, promote the high ethical standard in our noble profession and resist any move, in any means, to harass and intimidate journalists and prevent journalism.”

The NGE has urged journalists to avoid false news, disinformation, disappointment and propaganda, supporting the fundamental principles of accuracy, equity, objectivity and truth.

He also invited the government to all levels to desist from the use of repressive laws, including the Law on IT crime (prohibition and prevention, etc.), to harass media professionals.

β€œWe urge the government to always respect the Freedom of Information Act by freely providing journalists with information requested and, therefore, aligning with the United Nations Universal Day for access to information.

β€œWe urge the Nigerians to choose the truth, the facts and journalism, bearing in mind that facts based on facts is the foundation of healthy democracy.

“Fact -based journalism provides citizens with accurate and reliable information, allowing them to make informed decisions,” he said.
