Abuja (Core reporter) as Nigeria commemorates the World Press Freedom Day of 2025, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is proposing to issue a consultation on the use and deployment of artificial intelligence in Nigeria. While supporting the institution of ethical and legal paintings to face the myriad of challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).

To this end, the executive secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (San), has highlighted the need for regulations that guarantee that the development of the AI ​​aligned with the principles of human rights, preventing potential abuse and safeguarding fundamental freedoms.

Ojukwu, observed that while the IA could be distributed to improve journalistic activities such as the development of content, investigative relationships, research and control of facts, could also be a source of concern when it is manipulated by disinformation, IT bullying, emotional abuse and comments.

The Chief Human Rights Officer of Nigeria observed that the theme of the commemoration of 2025, “reporting in the new courageous world – the impact of artificial intelligence on freedom of printing and in the media” is suitable for the exponential growth of digital communications and the use of the AI ​​in practically all aspects of life.

According to the defender of human rights, “artificial intelligence tools strongly influenced the enjoyment of the right to freedom of expression and the media by eliminating obstacles to timely and effective communication. The artificial intelligence tools have at the same time helped the violation of the right to freedom of expression and the media if applied impossible without deference to ethical regulations.”

The head of the NHRC has urged citizens, including journalists to take advantage of the AI ​​in the most positive and responsible way to deepen the realization of the right to freedom of expression and the media, at the same time avoiding inciting declarations against the established authorities and other members of the public.

In the same way, the executive secretary has eliminated those who have authority to cooperate with journalists during downloading their constitutional responsibility which, among others, includes the responsible government towards the people.

He therefore urged all parties interested in always recognizing the press as a critical partner in the democratic process and desisting from any form of comparison and interference with the legitimate duties of journalists and other media workers, otherwise they will find themselves on the wrong part of the law.

The legal luminary praised journalists for having courageously download their constitutional responsibility despite occasional harassment, intimidation and kidnappings/destruction of their work tools by some too zealous security agents.

The observance of the world of world press freedom, said the executive secretary, is not an opportunity to blame any individual, institution or group of people, but it is time to remember the fundamental principles of freedom of press, meditating on the state of freedom of printing globally, defending the media from attacks on their independence and to make tributes to journalists who have lost their lives in their own line.

Basic journalists report that the World Press Freedom Day was celebrated for the first time in 1993 on May 3 to remind governments the need to respect their commitment to the freedom of the press and to remind journalists their obligation to professional ethics during their functions.
