Yobo demands better treatment of indigenous coaches

Former Super Eagles player Joseph Yobo has expressed his desire to become a football coach while demanding that indigenous coaches be treated better.

His call-up comes months after former international Finidi George resigned from the national team as head coach following alleged mistreatment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Yobo, who worked with the Super Eagles under Gernot Rohr and Austin Eguavoen, has now called on the NFF to change the way they treat indigenous coaches when they are in charge of the Super Eagles.

In a chat with Brila FM, Yobo confirmed that he has not closed the door to coaching.

“My life does not depend on coaching, but if I don’t go back to coaching, I believe Nigeria has lost something. Everyone who knows me knows that I love the game so much, I put my heart into it,” he said.

“I learned a lot from Gernot Rohr, but mostly from Eguavoen. They didn’t let me follow up so they could see what I had learned and how I could influence the players.

“I’m not closing the door to coaching, but it’s not my top priority. They need to change the way they treat local coaches.

“That’s the only reason I didn’t want to join while I was still playing, even though I had the chance to see how it worked,” he added in quotes revealed by Brila.

Recall that the 44-year-old captained the senior national team to victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations under the late coach Stephen Keshi.
