Young protesters burn down KPU office in Benue

Protesting youths on Wednesday burnt down the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sankara, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government in Benue State.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the attack in a statement in Abuja.

He said, the Provincial Election Commissioner (KPU), Prof. Sam Egwu, conveyed to the KPU leadership that the youths protested against bandit activities in the area at around 14.00.

Items destroyed in the attack included furniture, 10 power generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting booths, among others.

Protesters also destroyed other government facilities during the demonstrations.

The statement read: “The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu has reported that our Local Government Area office at Sankara, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area, was attacked and burnt down.

“The incident today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at around 14.00 WIB, when young people in the area were reportedly holding a demonstration to protest the activities of bandits who attacked a number of government agency facilities, including the KPU.

“Although no casualties were reported, the building was badly damaged. Office furniture and other movable and immovable materials, including 10 power generators, 300 ballot boxes and 270 voting booths, were destroyed in the attack.”
